The Registered Interior Designers Institute of Alberta Act- Requirements for “Registered Interior Designer” title

• Has either: a degree, which meets the minimum CIDA educational standards and is approved by Council, or been a Registered Member in good standing continuously since 2000
• Has successfully completed a minimum combination of six years of educational and practical training
• The education component must meet the requirements as set out in Item 3.4.2 of the Bylaws.
• A minimum of two years of the practical training must be under the direct supervision of a fully qualified Member of an interior design association recognized by Council

Alberta Architects Act- Requirements for “Licensed Interior Designer” title through Intern Interior Design Program

• Complete a Bachelor of Interior Design Degree from a Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) program.
• 3,520-hour work experience under direct supervision. S upervisor must be a Registered Architect (RA) or Licensed Interior Designer (LID) within a firm/organization registered with the AAA.
• Pass the NCIDQ exam and submit a copy of your NCIDQ certificate to the AAA.
• Complete required Architects Act course and an Alberta Building Code course as part of licensure requirements.
• Pass oral interview to validate your experience, professional judgement and competency to practice as a LID in Alberta.

Alberta Architects Act- Requirements for “Licensed Interior Designer” title through Experienced Interior Designer Pathway

• Possess a Professional Degree from a Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) program or be enrolled with an expected completion date of June 30, 2024.
• Hold certification from the Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ).
• Possess a minimum of 18,500 hours (approximately 10 years of full-time industry experience). You have at least 18,500 hours of practice experience in interior design with 940 of those hours being completed within the last two years and in the province of Alberta.
• Have been directly supervised by a Licensed Interior Designer or Registered Architect. You need to have completed 5,500 hours (three years) of full-time employment or three years under the direct supervision of a Registered Architect (RA) or a Licensed Interior Designer (LID).

Continuing Education Requirements

Minimum of 30 hours which includes a mandatory requirement of 15 IDCEC approved CEUs, of which 8 must be Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) hours. More information can be found here .

Reciprocity Policy

The Licensed Interior Designer (LID) title is a designation unique to Alberta. Therefore, no reciprocal licensing currently exists between Alberta and other jurisdictions nationally or internationally.

  • Category C: A licensed architect certified by the Arkansas State Board of Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers (ASBALAID) -AND- provides evidence of passage of the entire standard NCIDQ Exam.

• Member has achieved a minimum education requirement of a four-year bachelor’s degree in interior design from a program accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) or the equivalent as determined by the CIDQ Alternative Review Program (ARP).
• New Registered Members will be required to have completed an approximately 36 hour long BC Building Code course approved by IDIBC as part of their admission to IDIBC. The course must be taken within a six year period prior to application for RID membership.
• After graduating from a recognized interior design program, prospective interior designers must gain supervised work experience to ensure that they acquire the skills they will need to practice interior design. Upon graduating from a recognized interior design program, individuals must obtain a prescribed amount of supervised work experience. The supervisor must be one of the following:
  • a registered member of his or her provincial association
  • a licensed architect who provides interior design services
  • an NCIDQ certificate holder
• Alternative Review Program (ARP): ARP is for candidates who are unable to traditionally document the minimum educational requirement for interior design registration. Applicants must have a minimum of 8,800 hours (approximately 5 years) of work experience in interior design and must be able to document competencies based on current CIDA standards in eight key areas.​ Documentation will then be reviewed and if further information is required, a personal interview will be conducted.

  • Path 1:

The state of Colorado currently does NOT regulate the practice of interior design. Instead, under current law, interior design work is exempted from the types of work regulated under the laws governing the practice of architecture.

Under 2020 HB 1165 ,NCIDQ certificate holders wishing to submit interior design plans for permitting must sign their signature, their active NCIDQ number and their insurance policy number to the plans prior to submission to building officials.

Interior Designer Exemption Language:

(6) (a) Except as provided in subsection (6)(b) of this section, nothing in this part 4

prevents an interior designer from preparing interior design documents and specifications

for interior finishes and nonstructural elements within and surrounding interior spaces of a

building or structure of any size, height, and occupancy and filing the documents and

specifications for the purpose of obtaining approval for a building permit as provided by

law from the appropriate city, city and county, or regional building authority, which city,

city and county, or regional building authority may approve the filing in the same manner

as for other professions and may only reject the filing for a reason provided in law, which

reason may be based on a local government’s ordinance, resolution, or building code

adoption policy.

(b) (I) Interior designers shall not be engaged in the construction of:

(A) The structural frame system supporting a building;

(B) Mechanical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, or electrical vertical

transportation systems;

(C) Fire-rated vertical shafts in any multistory structure;

(D) Fire-related protection of structural elements;

(E) Smoke evacuation and compartmentalization;

(F) Emergency sprinkler systems;

(G) Emergency alarm systems; or

(H) Any other alteration affecting the life safety of the occupants of a building outside

the content of the interior design documents and specifications listed in subsection (6)(a) of

this section.

(II) An interior designer shall, as a condition of filing interior design documents and

specifications for the purpose of obtaining approval for a building permit, provide to the

responsible building official of the jurisdiction proof of the interior designer’s professional

liability insurance coverage that is in force. An interior designer is not subject to any of the

restrictions set forth in subsections (1)(b) and (1)(d) of this section.

(c) As used in this subsection (6), “interior designer” means a person who:

(I) Engages in:

(A) Consultation, study, design analysis, drawing, space planning, and specification for

nonstructural or nonseismic interior construction with due concern for the life safety of the

occupants of the building;

(B) Preparing and submitting interior design documents for the purpose of obtaining

approval for a building permit as provided by law for nonstructural or nonseismic interior

construction, materials, finishes, space planning, furnishings, fixtures, equipment, lighting,

and reflected ceiling plans;

(C) Designing for fabrication nonstructural elements within and surrounding interior

spaces of buildings; or

(D) The administration of design construction and contract documents, as the clients’

agent, relating to the functions described in subsections (6)(c)(I)(A) to (6)(c)(I)(C) of this

section, and collaboration with specialty consultants and licensed practitioners in other areas

of technical expertise; and

(II) Possesses written documentation that the interior designer:

(A) and (B) (Deleted by amendment, L. 2020.)

(C) Has met the education and experience requirements of, and has subsequently

passed, the qualification examination promulgated by the Council for Interior Design

Qualification or its successor organization; and

(D) Maintains active certification with the Council for Interior Design Qualification or

its successor organization.

(d) As used in this subsection (6), “nonstructural or nonseismic” includes interior elements

or components that are not load-bearing, do not assist in the seismic design, and do not require

structural computations for a building. Common nonstructural or nonseismic elements or

components include ceiling and partition systems that employ normal and typical bracing

conventions and are not part of the structural integrity of the building.

• (481.209) A person seeking to obtain a certificate of registration as a registered interior designer and a seal pursuant to s. 481.221 must provide the department with his or her name and address and written proof that he or she has successfully passed the qualification examination prescribed by the Council for Interior Design Qualification or its successor entity or has successfully passed an equivalent exam as determined by the department. Any person who is licensed as an interior designer by the department and who was in good standing as of July 1, 2020, is eligible to obtain a certificate of registration as a registered interior designer.

• A registered interior designer must have completed twelve (12) hours of acceptable continuing education during the two-year period immediately preceding each biennial renewal date as a condition for registration renewal. Of these, at least six (6) hours must be in Public Protection Subjects acquired in Structured Education Activities. The remaining units may be in Related Practice Subjects acquired in Structured Educational Activities or in Public Protection. Computerized courses are accepted from Approved Programs. Certificate subjects for public protection units must indicate the course qualification for health, safety, and welfare.

• Any person who has been certified or registered as an interior designer in another state or foreign country may be issued a certificate of registration by the board to use the title “registered interior designer,” provided that such person demonstrates to the satisfaction of the board that he meets the requirements for registration in this state.

• An interior designer must qualify to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam. There are several routes an Interior Designer can take to qualify for the NCIDQ exam. • The board shall certify an applicant who has obtained a four (4) or five (5) year professional accredited degree; and at least two (2) years of acceptable full-time employment in the performance of interior design services
• In lieu of the education and experience requirements, the board may deem an applicant eligible for certification if, prior to January 1, 2012, the applicant:
  • Has received a degree from a program not accredited by CIDA or NAAB; and otherwise meets the requirement of this section. To qualify under this section, the applicant shall be a graduate of a nonaccredited program of:
    • Five (5) years of more which included at least 150 semester credits, of which ninety (90) or more are interior design related, or 225 quarter credits, of which 135 or more are interior design related, and who has completed at least two (2) years of acceptable interior design experience
    • Four (4) years or more which included at least 120 semester credits, of which sixty (60) or more are interior design related, or 180 quarter credits, of which ninety (90) or more are interior design related, and who has completed at least three (3) years of acceptable interior design experience
    • Three (3) years or more which included at least sixty (60) semester credits of interior design related coursework, or ninety (90) quarter credits of interior design related coursework, and who has completed at least four (4) years of acceptable interior design experience
    • Two (2) years or more which included at least forty (40) semester credits of interior design related coursework, or sixty (60) quarter credits of interior design related coursework, and who has completed five (5) years of acceptable interior design experience
  • Full-time employment shall include at least thirty-five (35) hours per week n the performance of interior design services. To be deemed acceptable, experience shall be obtained under the supervision of:
    • An interior designer who has passed the NCIDQ examination;
    • A licensed architect; or
    • An interior designer who is licensed, certified, or registered by a state or provincial regulatory agency

• Have a combination of 6 years of Interior Design education and work experience from one of the following paths:
  • Is a graduate from an interior design program of five years or more and has completed one year of interior design experience

  • Has completed at least three years in an interior design curriculum and has completed three years of interior design experience
  • Is a graduate from an interior design program of at least two years and has completed four years of interior design experience
• All such education shall have been obtained in a program, school, or college of interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). Unaccredited program, school, or college of interior design must be approved by the board during the licensing application process.

Continuing Education Requirements

• Louisiana Registered Interior Designers are required to complete 5 hours of LSBID (Louisiana State Board of Interior Designers) approved Continuing Education each calendar year. Louisiana law requires that only courses that are designated as Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) be approved by LSBID. Courses that are designated as ‘general’ will not be approved for LSBID credit.

• Candidates must hold a four (4) year degree from an accredited program determined by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA)
• Where a candidate has not graduated from an accredited program, but has acquired all of the skills required of a graduate of an Accredited Education Program through education or experience and applies to The PIDIM for membership, the Membership Regulation provides for an Alternative Pathway to Membership. Working with the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO), The PIDIM uses the Intern Competancy Review System (ICRS) . The ICRS assess a candidates education, training and any work experience to determine if they posess the competencies equivalent to the minimum education requirement. The ICRS requires candidates to complete an evidence based book of competencies which is then independently reviewed and assessed.

The education requirement must be fulfilled by one of the following options as described:
  • (Subitem 1) graduation from a four- or five-year professional-level interior design program resulting in a bachelor’s or master’s degree, which includes completion of 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits of interior design course content from a program accredited by CIDA or its predecessor, FIDER, or equivalent education;
  • (Subitem 2) graduation prior to June 1, 2013, from a two-year preprofessional or paraprofessional program in interior design accredited by CIDA or its predecessor, FIDER, or equivalent education; or
  • (Subitem 3) graduation prior to June 1, 2013, from a three-year professional level program in interior design accredited by CIDA or its predecessor, FIDER, or equivalent education.
• Experience must be under the direct supervision of a certified interior designer, NCIDQ certificate holder, licensed architect, or, for experience gained prior to June 1, 2013, an interior designer.
  • If the applicant meets the educational requirements of item A, subitem (1), the experience required is completion of the Interior Design Experience Program (IDEP), as provided by CIDQ or its successor, or a minimum of two years of qualifying interior design experience.
  • If the applicant meets the educational requirements of item A, subitem (2), the experience required is completion of a minimum of four years of qualifying interior design experience.

  • Integration of findings with knowledge of interior design;
  • Formulation of preliminary design concepts that are appropriate, functional, and aesthetic;
  • Development and presentation of final design recommendations through presentation media;
  • Preparation of working drawings and specifications for non-load bearing interior construction, materials, finishes, space planning, furnishing, fixtures, and equipment;
  • Collaboration with professional services of other licensed practitioners in the technical areas of mechanical, electrical, and load-bearing design required for regulatory approval;
  • Preparation and administration of bids and contract documents as the client’s agent; and
  • Review and evaluation of design solutions during implementation and upon completion.
• An applicant shall have worked at least one thousand six hundred hours (1,600) hours in a calendar year to obtain credit for a year’s worth of diversified interior design experience.

Earlier programs that were CIDA-accredited at the pre-professional assistant level will be reviewed for equivalency to an associate-degree curriculum.
• For a program to be considered “equivalent:”
  • A baccalaureate degree curriculum must contain at least 48 semester hours of coursework in the following content areas:
    • (1) drafting and presentation techniques;
    • (2) fundamentals of space planning and design;
    • (3) materials and methods of construction;
    • (4) furniture, finishes, and equipment;
    • (5) history of architecture and the decorative arts;
    • (6) codes – construction, fire, safety, and accessibility;

    • an NCIDQ certificate holder
  • All qualified hours under the supervision of one of the above are counted at 100% in value. Any work experience under supervisory relationships outside the above will result in hours being accrued at lower values. The amount of qualified work experience is needed depends on a number of factors, including education and type of qualified work experience received.

• Per SB 1319: The board may issue a certificate to provide interior design services as a certified interior designer in this Commonwealth, without examination, to any individual who is licensed, registered or certified as an interior designer in another state or country where the qualifications required are equivalent to those required in this Commonwealth. The possession of a certificate from the Council for Interior Design Qualification shall be prima facie evidence that the individual meets the qualifications required in this Commonwealth.

• Registered Members of IDAS have achieved a combination of six years design education and professional experience. Design Education must be attained from an Interior Design degree program. Education + Work Experience Requirements

• Education: An Interior Designer Degree Verification Form is provided for all applicants. At a minimum, all applicants must hold a 4-year professional degree from an institution accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA or other equivalent accrediting organization); a professional degree in architecture obtained by completing a NAAB-approved curriculum; or a professional program approved by the Board. The definition of “a professional program approved by the Board” is provided in Regulation 18 VAC 10-20-460. Completion of a “professional program approved by the board” meaning a 4-year degree in an interior design program or a master’s degree in interior design combined with a 4-year degree which has been evaluated and is deemed by the board to be substantially equivalent (at the time of the applicant’s graduation) to a 4- year interior design degree program accredited by CIDA.
• Experience: A minimum of 2 years of monitored experience must be documented on an Interior Designer Experience Verification Form(s). Any experience verified on forms other than those provided by the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation will not be considered. Resumes are not acceptable. A separate Experience Verification Form should be completed for each employment engagement. No credit is allowed for non-verified employment. Credit will only be given for full-time work experience (minimum of 35 hours per week) under the supervision of a certified or licensed interior designer, architect or professional engineer. Experience gained under the supervision of a professional engineer shall be reduced by 50% with a maximum of 6 months.

Continuing Education Requirements

• 16 hours of continuing education for any renewal or reinstatment during the two year license period

Reciprocity Policy

• An applicant with a valid license or certificate in another state or country or the District of Columbia may be issued a certificate if he provides satisfactory evidence to the board that:
