Missouri Updates Interior Design Law

July 13, 2026

The Missouri Legislature has enacted legislation that creates independent practice rights for NCIDQ Certified interior designers. Signed into law by Gov. Mike Kehoe on July 13, 2026, Senate Bill 1233 updates the state’s interior design Title Act, allowing licensed interior designers to practice independently and sign and seal their own documents.

The new law continues a broader trend of states modernizing interior design regulations. Since 2021, North Carolina, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alaska, Idaho, and Utah have adopted similar measures.

The legislation follows a multi-year advocacy effort led by the Missouri chapters of the American Society of Interior Designers and the International Interior Design Association, with support from the Consortium of Interior Design—a partnership of ASID, IIDA, and the Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ).

In addition to expanding practice authority, SB 1233 updates the state’s interior designer registration process through Missouri’s Division of Professional Registration and formalizes a framework for recommendations from the Interior Design Council to the state licensing board overseeing design and related professions.
